How this calculation works
The next anniversary is found by taking the day and month of the original date and placing it in the current year. If that date has already passed, the following year is used instead. The countdown is then the number of whole days between the two dates.
Counting in whole days
Days are counted as calendar days rather than 24-hour blocks, so the answer does not change depending on the time of day you check. If your birthday is tomorrow, it says one day whether you look in the morning or late at night.
Leap-year birthdays
A 29 February birthday only occurs in leap years. In other years the countdown targets 28 February, and the result also tells you when the next real 29 February falls — which may be up to four years away, or eight across a skipped century year such as 2100.
Working out the weekday
The weekday of the coming birthday is included, because it usually decides whether the celebration happens on the day or at the weekend either side.
Worked example
Born 15 June 1990, counting from 30 July 2026
- 15 June 2026 has already passed, so the next birthday is 15 June 2027.
- That is 320 days away.
- 15 June 2027 falls on a Tuesday.
- They will be turning 37.
Had the count started on 1 June 2026 instead, the next birthday would have been 15 June 2026, just fourteen days away.
Limitations
- Times of day are not used; the countdown works in whole calendar days.
- The count is based on your device clock and time zone.
- Dates in the future produce a countdown to the first anniversary rather than an age.
Frequently asked questions
What happens on the birthday itself?
The countdown reads zero days and the result says the birthday is today. The next birthday shown after that is the following year, so the count never jumps to 365 while it is still the day.
How is a 29 February birthday handled?
In years without a 29 February the countdown targets 28 February, which is the usual convention. The result says when the next real 29 February birthday falls, which is worth knowing if you were planning a party.
Does the countdown update live?
The hours and minutes are calculated when the page loads or when you change a field, using your device clock. Reload the page for a fresh reading.
Can I count down to something other than a birthday?
Yes. Any annual date works — a wedding anniversary, a work anniversary, a renewal date or a recurring deadline. Enter the original date and the countdown targets its next anniversary.
Why does it say a different number of days than another site?
Usually because of time zones. This countdown measures whole days from today in your own zone. A site calculating in UTC can be a day out for anyone west of Greenwich in the evening.
