How this calculation works
Age is counted the way people actually count it: whole years since the birth date, then whole months since that anniversary, then the days left over. Nothing is divided or averaged, so the answer always matches the birthday you would celebrate.
Month lengths
Because months differ in length, the day count at the end is measured from the monthly anniversary rather than from a fixed 30-day month. Someone born on the 31st has their monthly anniversary on the last day of any shorter month, so 31 January to 1 March is one month and one day old, not two months less thirty days.
Leap-year birthdays
A person born on 29 February has a real birthday only every four years. This calculator treats 28 February as the anniversary in other years, so they turn a year older on the 28th. That is the ordinary convention in the UK and United States. A few jurisdictions treat 1 March as the anniversary for legal purposes, so confirm the rule if the exact day matters.
Total days, weeks and hours
These are conversions of the whole-day count, which is why the total days figure will not divide neatly into the years shown. The hours figure assumes 24 hours per day and does not account for daylight-saving changes.
Worked example
Born 15 June 1990, age on 30 July 2026
- 15 June 2026 is the 36th birthday.
- 15 July 2026 is one month after that.
- 30 July 2026 is fifteen days later.
- The exact age is 36 years, 1 month and 15 days.
That is 13,194 days in total, which divided by 365 would suggest 36.15 years — close, but not the figure anyone would actually use.
Limitations
- Times of birth are not used; ages are calculated from calendar dates.
- A birth date after the "age on" date produces a negative result, which the calculator reports as a time until birth rather than an age.
- Legal ages of majority, school year cut-offs and pension ages have their own rules and are not applied here.
Frequently asked questions
How is an exact age worked out?
Whole years are counted first, then whole months from that anniversary, then the leftover days. Someone born on 15 March 2000 is 26 years, 4 months and 15 days old on 30 July 2026, because 15 March 2026 is their 26th birthday, 15 July is four months later, and 30 July is fifteen days after that.
When does someone born on 29 February have a birthday?
This calculator treats 28 February as the anniversary in non-leap years, so a leap-year baby turns a year older on 28 February three years out of four. That matches the usual convention in the UK and the United States. Some jurisdictions use 1 March instead, so check if the exact date has legal consequences.
Why does the age not match total days divided by 365?
Because years are not all 365 days long. Dividing by 365 overstates age slightly, and dividing by 365.25 is only an approximation. Counting whole calendar years from the birth date gives the age everyone actually uses.
Can I find an age on a past or future date?
Yes. Change the "age on" date to any date you like. This is useful for checking eligibility on a policy start date, a school cut-off, or an exam date.
Does time of day matter?
No. Ages are calculated from calendar dates, which is how they are recorded and used almost everywhere. Someone born at 23:55 is the same age the next morning as someone born at 00:05 that day.
